The catchy synthesizer part was on repeat in my brain this morning.

“Love Action,” released in 1981, was their first song to break the top 10 in the UK. It did not chart in the US. A few months later, they would release their best known song from the same album, “Don’t You Want Me.”

Phil Oakley had a much deeper voice than I remember.

“Geno” hit number one in the UK two years before their 1982 worldwide hit “Come on Eileen.” According to Wikipedia, the song was a tribute to soul singer Geno Washington and was done in the style of Geno Washington’s Ram Jam Band.

It’s a catchy song that has grown on my over the past couple years.

When I wake up with “Geno” in my head, it’s generally one of three parts:

  • The horn part at 1:34

  • The lyric part at 2:14

  • The “Oh Geno” part toward the end at 3:09

“It Doesn’t Have to Be This Way” made it to number five in the UK but didn’t chart in the US. However, it was featured in the 1987 comedy film Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol.

Wikipedia describes their sound as new wave/sophisti-pop.
